The world is in a turbulent state. Wars are being waged close to home and tensions are rising. So it’s important for Europe to come together and shoulder its responsibility. That’s why I’ll be meeting my European counterparts today at the informal EU Council in Cyprus, with a view to working towards solutions to the major issues facing us now.
Yesterday evening we spoke with President Zelenskyy about Ukraine and the support still needed by its people, who live with war on a daily basis.
We will also be discussing the Middle East and how we can use diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and take steps towards peace. More practically, we will talk about how to ensure that the people there get the assistance they so badly need. And about how to restore the prospect of a future in which people can rebuild their lives.
In the meantime the consequences of these conflicts are being felt here in Europe too. The economy in general, businesses and people’s day-to-day lives have all been affected. Europe needs to step up and take measures that offer help now, while also safeguarding our future. That’s why we must make choices about the EU budget, in order to invest in security, cooperation and a sustainable future – the things that really matter.
At times like these it’s all about taking responsibility. For one another. For Europe. And for the future.
