Freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must not be obstructed in any way. The impact of the current situation is being felt worldwide, including here in the Netherlands. This afternoon, I spoke with the leaders of 50 countries in a video conference to discuss how we can work together to find a solution.
This starts with putting pressure on Iran to respect the principle of free passage. A further possibility is a military mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities have ceased. The Netherlands is exploring this, and we are working with allies on the military planning.
Even following the announced ceasefire, there are still many uncertainties, and developments are unfolding at a rapid pace. That is why we are pursuing various scenarios. One thing is clear: shipping must always be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz unhindered.
