.@Mira Bar-Matthews, a researcher at the @Geological Survey of Israel, spent decades studying stalactites and stalagmites in caves across Israel - discovering that they preserve detailed records of ancient climate patterns, rainfall, and even earthquakes.
Working extensively with formations from Soreq Cave, her research transformed cave formations into natural climate archives, helping scientists better understand both Earth’s past and the environmental challenges shaping its future.
This year, Bar-Matthews was awarded the 2026 Israel Prize in Geology and Earth Sciences for her work.
